Global Challenges Research Fund calls

  • The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) is a £1.5 billion fund announced by the UK Government to support cutting-edge research that addresses the challenges faced by developing countries.
    • Challenge-led disciplinary and interdisciplinary research: strengthening capacity for research and innovation within both the UK and developing countries, and providing an agile response to emergencies where there is an urgent research need.
    • Challenge Areas: 1) Secure and resilient food systems supported by sustainable agriculture, 2) Sustainable health and well being, 3) Inclusive and equitable quality education, 4) Clean air, water and sanitation, 5) Renewable energy and materials.
    • Fund research for longer-term builds: 1) Sustainable livelihoods supported by strong foundations for inclusive economic growth and innovation; 2) Resilience and action on short-term environmental shocks and long-term environmental change; 3) Sustainable cities and communities.
    • Fund research that will enable us to: 1) understand and effectively respond to forced displacement and multiple refugee crises; 2) reduce conflict and promote peace, justice and humanitarian action, 3) reduce poverty and inequality, including gender inequalities.
    • Only countries on the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) list of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) are eligible for funding. China is on the list.
    • An Official Development Assistance Global Challenges Research Fund Guidance has been developed in consultation with the Department for International Development to provide general guidance on ODA compliance to applicants for Global Challenges Research Fund grants.
